CRAIGMONT, Idaho (CBS2) — The Idaho Department of Lands is seeking wildland firefighters who can lead crews in the Craig Mountain Forest Protective District.
Idaho has been hit hard by the nationwide shortage of experienced firefighters. Craig Mountain is currently short two engine bosses.
The fire district is one of Idaho's busiest. Last year it saw 38 wildfires that burned more than 110,000 acres. With wildfire season about to begin, experienced firefighters are needed more than ever.
“Idaho’s forestry sector contributes $2.4 billion annually to our economy,” said Carl Crabtree, District 7 Senator. “We are in competition with surrounding states and the federal government, but we hope the better pay and great work atmosphere of this premier firefighting agency will help bring experienced firefighters to IDL and keep them here to protect our state and economy."
Idaho Department of Lands engine teams start at $18 an hour and qualify for overtime and health benefits, as well as PERSI retirement options.
