Ariel Helwani is quite possibly the most known MMA journalist around. After being fired by Dana White from his promotion back at UFC 199, Helwani has been hosting his own show, called the MMA hour. Prior to this, he was signed with ESPN.
Ariel Helwani has now, once again found himself in the thick of the action. The first person to attack him was Jake Shields, ex-UFC middleweight prospect, who tweeted, “Throwback to @arielhelwani fangirling over double murderer OJ Simpson.” This prompted a response from another ex-UFC fighter, Ramsey Nijmen. He commented under the Tweet by Shields, “Or his dad famously said Palestinians are not even humans.”
Or his dad famously said Palestinians are not even humans
— Ramsey Nijem (@RamseyNijem) September 21, 2022Although MMA fans in the comments have been asking for receipts of this dialogue, this comment has come at the wrong time for Helwani. Last year, Ariel Helwani said that American fighter Belal Muhammad (who has Palestinian roots) had an issue with him (who is Jew), because of an “Israel-Palestine problem.” This did not sit well with Muhammad, who said that the problem was not ethno-political, but just the fact that Helwani hadn’t given him props since Day 1.

— Belal Muhammad (@bullyb170) October 15, 2021Ramsey Nijmen had even commented back then, saying, “He’s a well known Zionist and supporter of genocide.” He continued: “Only interview I did with him I brought light to Palestinians and that was the end of our conversations.”
This does not bode well for the journalist, whose career has been mired with controversies.
Dana White and Ariel Helwani have always had a rocky back and forth. One YouTube search of the two names will reveal how the two have always been at loggerheads. One of the most famous moments between the two was during the presser for UFC 158 in 2013. According to White, Helwani was trying to antagonize Diaz for not turning up the day before, which he had no appreciation for.

However, the reason for his firing was the fact that prior to UFC 199, he had revealed a piece of information that was being kept a secret from the public.
The piece of information, in particular, is the fact that Brock Lesnar was supposed to make a fantastic comeback at UFC 199. But, before this could be officially revealed by the UFC, Helwani apparently leaked it.
Since, however, Ariel Helwani has gone on to stamp his own authority on the MMA media. With quite possibly the biggest following amongst all MMA journalists, whenever he posts, his audience stops and takes out time to look at whether it is new information that he has provided.
On top of that, Helwani stays true to his cause – that is, to support the fighters. In 2021, he publicly supported Jake Paul’s lambasting of Dana White over the issue of fighter pay, to which the MMA community showed him their approval. While Paul’s antics have lessened in magnitude, Helwani continues to stick to his guns, asking for overall betterment of the fighters’ lives, which includes a better coverage of their health, during and after their careers.
